The world is crawling with things that go bump in the night - most people just aren’t aware of it. They live out their lives in innocent ignorance of the supernatural society, denying the obvious when they see it. That is where the Watches - the Others - come in.

Tiny dust particles sparkled in the rays of light shining through the nearly ancient windows. It reflected off the wood of the tables, spilling over the chairs and onto the tiled floor like a river of gold. Whisperes echoed forth and back again, scattered like ghosts throughout this palace of tomes. However, in the back, another sound could be heard. The muffled blaring of a used mp3 player.

Azriel sat in one of the chairs, eyes closed, arms folded behind his head and feet up on the table. The even flow of his breathing was the only thing that showed life in his sleeping form. The pale skin of his bare chest was visible only through the part in his unzipped jacket; black leather, partially covered in the sunlight that crept up toward his face as if anxious to wake him.

Azriel...

He heard her voice, clear and ringing.

Psycho?

His eyes searched this place within his mind. The ruined columns of a once great palace now covered in vines. There, just beyond the first, he saw her. Blazing in her spotted coat as she turned to run playfully away, her laugh echoed. The sound of it warmed him and he quietly stepped after her. However, her trek was elusive. All he earned was a glance here, a scent there. Suddenly a sound.

He turned to see her behind him, her tail looking more like feathers, her miss-matched eyes gazing at him with admiration. But then she spoke. Her voice echoed two as one with one quietly speaking, the other screaming in pain. All at once,

Help! The sound echoed again as she stood there, expression unchanged,

Why? You did this! Red began to stain and spill from the white fur at her throat and it began to turn black beyond that. Psycho's face morphed into Hell Fang's,

You did this to me! She howled, her throat tearing out completely as she threw herself at him, eyes crazed. He recoiled, blood filling his eyes, his nose, his throat.

BAM!

The wooden chair lay now on the floor opposite him, the dust in the air still sparkled quietly. He snorted, as if the sunlight were mocking him and sat up to rub the back of his head.

"Damn," He cursed in a whisper as he grabbed the screaming mp3. Replacing the headphones and resetting the song, he stood and set up the fallen chair.

Nightmares were most common for Azriel, they had haunted him for as long as he could remember, and now hardly bothered him. He plopped back into his seat, throwing his feet back up on the desk. He closed his eyes again, but reopened one gold orb to scan the surrounding area. Had anyone seen him fall? Not that it mattered, he figured, shutting his eye again. There was tiny glimmer of loneliness deep inside him them, but he crushed it, focusing only on the angry music blaring at full volume into his ears.

Books. So many books. And no answers whatsoever. It was like those few lines from that Coleridge poem. 'Water, water everywhere; and not a drop to drink.' At least that's what the situation seemed like to Suzumi. She had come to the library previously, and had found few answers to the questions she had; although none of them were in printed format. As far as the shapeshifter was concerned, the only resource that would help her learn more about what she was would be more Others, preferably Gifted or shapeshifters like herself. From what she had come to understand, the vampires and weres would kill her as soon as look at her. Quite frankly, the gymnast was happy to avoid both.

She perused the shelves of the library, but not looking for anything in particular. School had let up a little, so there weren't any projects that demanded tons of research assigned to her; which she was extremely grateful for. The less that she had to deal with, the better. As she observed her surroundings, the teenager noticed a man leaning back in a chair, feet propped on the table opposite her. He seemed to be asleep, judging from his closed eyes, which made the girl wonder what he was doing in the library in the first place. The blaring of his mp3 player only strengthened the question dwelling in her mind. Why not sit in some cafe outside, if one was going to behave like that? Although, most people tended not to bother one when in a library. Still, the man's actions seemed rather inconsiderate. However, Suzumi wouldn't let that bother her.

She turned back to her study of the bookshelves' contents, trying her best to ignore the music seeping out from the headphones. Suddenly, the sound of the chair making contact with the floor erupted, causing the girl to leap in surprise. Blinking, she found herself on top of the bookshelf, having launched herself up there by means of....her kangaroo legs. Brilliant. Peering down at the figure who was now recovering from his fall, the girl could only wonder if he had noticed or not. Despite her fervent desire to change back, the reversion to a purely human form seemed to be taking its own sweet time.

Wonderful, Suzumi. Just go out in the middle of the street and shapeshift, it'd be easier than doing it front of people one by one.'

The girl sighed, too caught up in rebuking herself to notice if the man was staring at her or not.

Due to the blazing music in his head, he didn't hear her shoot up to the top shelf, however as he gazed around searching for any eyes that had seen his rather embarrassing spill, his he found her, burning in a blaze of gold into her skin that would send goosebumps up the flesh of any usual bystander. What was she doing up there? His obvious glare was not on purpose, but simply an expression that was "normal" to this one. He plucked on speaker out of his ear and wandered over to stand at the bookshelf, not noticing her legs or perhaps simply not caring. His glare changed to a gaze of uninterested, but regardless his voice flowed out into the quiet air. Thick, velvety almost like a purr, yet rough with years of pain and secrets he would think she couldn't even begin to fathom.

"Hey you, lose something?" His attempt at humor was, well, more of an attempt at mockery. He didn't intend to offend her, but he had no intention of simply 'being nice' either.

She was young, like his lost love. Such a thought spurred memories of the nightmare seconds before and unconsciously turned his mouth into a hard line, and his eyes narrowed a moment. Realizing this he glanced around the room, looking for any signs of authority figures. Instead they found a ladder on wheel across the small hall form by the shelves. In a rare act of kindness he found his way over to the thing and merely kicked it over to the shelf with the 'stranded' girl. The wheels whirred against the ground a moment before the ladder bumped against the heavy shelf with a small clatter.

He gave little thought as to how she got up there, and cared a little about how she would get down without him holding the ladder still for her. Perhaps he'd offer the gesture, then again perhaps he wouldn't.

An ere of unease was coming from the girl, that always seemed to happen around him, though little did he know the vibe have very little to do with him after all. With a roll of his eyes, he decided to indeed hold the ladder in place and glanced up at her though the tendrils of ebony hair that had managed to sit freely across his face, "Well? You coming?" His voice held no emotion, no impatience or rudeness, just a firmness and strength that came from one who didn't like people, but didn't like leaving either.

Suzumi's eyes darted about as she waited to transform fully back into a human, hoping that the young man didn't see. However, her dark eyes caught the full intensity of his golden stare, leading her to believe that he had witnessed the entire incident. Also, his gaze led her to wonder how to best explain her reason for being up there. The truth? Some sort of poorly fabricated lie that he'd immediately see right through? Oh, the dilemma. Still, the ferocity of his unwavering stare made the hair on the back of her neck stand on in. The gymnast was getting some weird vibes from this guy. Was he one of those scene kids or something? She could feel her cheeks growing hot with embarrassment before he opened his mouth and remarked,

"Hey you, lose something?"

Although bewildered, both by his comment to her and by the initial means of climbing the bookshelf, Suzumi kept her wits about her. She didn't really appreciate that small hint of sarcasm in his tone, and thought about telling him as such. However, how should she reply to this fellow? With sarcasm of her own? Ignoring him completely? As far as impressions went, Suzumi was convinced that she probably came off as a total airhead. She had made a resolution to try and think more before she spoke, but it was proving difficult in this case. Besides, she didn't want to come off as slow-witted for taking a century to reply. Instead of averting her eyes from his gaze, the shapeshifter simply maintained eye contact.

"My contact lens."

This statement had a notable amount of sarcasm within it, which he would hopefully be able to pick up. If not, whatever. The teenager simply stared down at him, her legs dangling. Not the most witty retort ever, but it would suffice. Besides, he didn't really seem to care how she got up there in the first place, so she wouldn't bother offering an explanation.

His journey to retrieve the ladder made her wonder if he was leaving, until she observed his intent to kick the ladder. She hastily pulled her legs out of the way, as the ladder came hurtling towards her. Although her jeans afforded some protection, the athlete preferred to not sit out for the season because of some silly injury inflected by a runaway ladder.

"Well? You coming?"

Oh, the urge to show off was so strong at this moment. First, she'd thank him and tell him that he was chivalrous, but she preferred to rescue herself...and then she'd do a flip or a twist while in mid-air...As tempting as it was to leap from the bookshelf and use one of her gymnastics tricks to look cool before landing on the ground, Suzumi retained her self-restraint. Common sense dictated that if she landed wrong, she would only look idiotic, and potentially be in a great amount of pain. Not worth it, especially simply to impress some mysterious bystander whose opinion she didn't really care about anyway.

"...Yeah."

By the time her little reverie was finished, her legs had apparently gone back to normal. Which was nice, since climbing a ladder with kangaroo limbs would've been extremely difficult. The pyromancer scampered down the ladder with relative ease. As tempting as it was to just slide down the ladder, it would be quite rude to injure her 'benefactor'. Although she initially had pegged him as the snarky type, the lad was nice enough to hold the ladder for her.

Upon reaching the ground, the shapeshifter looked up at the youth. Her next words were free from sarcasm,

"Thanks. Sorry to bother you."
